Surveillance for Antimicrobial Resistance and Consumption of Antimicrobials in South Africa 2021

Surveillance for Antimicrobial Resistance and Consumption of Antimicrobials in South Africa 2021

This report contains a snapshot of the use and impact of antibiotics in the environment. Surveillance within the water-plant-food interface remains limited in South Africa
currently, although research is being done in various aspects e.g., identification and characterisation of multidrug-resistant potential foodborne pathogens from fresh
produce and irrigation water. Increased capacity and integration into other structures will need to be investigated to improve the surveillance capacity in this area.
